Abstract

This study was motivated by changes in the use of the noble title “Daeng” in the social life of the Gowa Regency community, where its use is no longer limited to genealogical identity and particular social status. This study aims to describe the history of “Daeng,” analyze its position within contemporary social stratification, and identify factors associated with changes in its meaning and function. A qualitative approach with an ethnographic design was employed. The participants consisted of four representatives: a community leader, a traditional or nobility representative, a “Daeng” user, and a member of the general public. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and were analyzed interactively through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that “Daeng” originated in kinship relations, honor, genealogical identity, and social structure, but its contemporary use has expanded as a respectful form of address in public interactions. This shift is associated with changes in social structure, education, modernization, mobility, and broader social interaction. The findings demonstrate that the transformation of “Daeng” represents a process of cultural adaptation that maintains cultural identity while accommodating changes in the social life of the Gowa community.
